The City of Alabaster Water Division is accepting applications from current City employees for the position of Water Production Maintenance Technician. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of the City's water production facilities, equipment, and infrastructure while supporting compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations.
Position Summary
The Water Production Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and calibration of equipment used throughout the City's water treatment and production systems. This position works with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and SCADA equipment while assisting with daily plant operations to ensure the safe and continuous delivery of quality drinking water.
Essential Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on water treatment equipment and machinery.
Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain pumps, motors, generators, valves, chemical feed systems, electrical controls, and related equipment.
Install and upgrade mechanical and electrical equipment.
Calibrate, troubleshoot, and program PLCs, flow meters, pressure instrumentation, and telemetry equipment.
Maintain membrane filtration systems, analyzers, plant piping, and chemical feed systems.
Inspect, maintain, and repair booster stations, pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and associated instrumentation.
Troubleshoot pump failures, telemetry systems, and SCADA communications.
Perform inspections of storage tanks, wells, purchase water sites, and related facilities.
Assist with tank inspections, cleaning, rehabilitation projects, and water quality equipment calibration.
Support plant operators with Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedures, chlorine cylinder replacement, chemical handling, and regulatory compliance activities.
Perform welding, fabrication, electrical repairs, and general maintenance as needed.
Operate heavy equipment including forklifts, cranes, generators, compressors, and specialized maintenance tools.
Maintain production sites, equipment, vehicles, and facilities in a clean and safe condition.
Participate in safety meetings and maintain compliance with all departmental safety policies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Successful candidates should possess:
Knowledge of water production operations and maintenance practices.
Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and motor systems.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair industrial equipment.
Experience operating heavy equipment and specialized maintenance tools.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to respond to emergency call-outs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when required.
Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Alabama Grade II Water Operator Certification required.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in water operations or a closely related field.
Valid Alabama driver's license required.
Preference given to applicants holding a valid Alabama Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B or higher.
This position is intended to provide a career pathway for employees pursuing Grade IV Water Operator Certification. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the ability and commitment to obtain Grade IV certification within one (1) year of placement into the position.
